Lewis Underwood Munson grew up in Angleton and graduated from Angleton High School. Afterward, he attended Schreiner Institute in Kerrville, Texas, for one year. He then returned to Brazoria County where, except for a brief time spent in Boerne, Texas, as ranch manager for his brother-in-law Tony Robertson, he was a part-time cattleman for the rest of his life. He worked for the Freeport Sulfur Company in Louisiana for a short time, then with the Texas Livestock Commission as an inspector in its cattle-fever-tick eradication program. From 1939 till 1972, he was employed by the Dow Chemical Company in Freeport, Texas, as a power-plant operator. After retirement he worked in the Brazoria County tax office as a tax appraiser from 1972 till 1977.8

Lewis, the youngest of Stephen and Carrie (Diggs) Munson's children, was a sickly child, and his brother Armour was always very protective of him. Once when Lewis was a pretty big boy, Armour found him crying. Lewis complained that "Papa whipped me for something I didn't do!" When Armour asked what it was he didn't do, Lewis replied, "I didn't come home last night!" The story behind the story is that he was at Bailey's Prairie with his cousins Willie and Joe Munson. Joe and Lewis were about the same age, and Willie was much older, he being the first cousin of the boys' fathers. Joe had permission to spend the night with Cousin Willie; Lewis did not, but decided to stay anyway. Lewis' father was undoubtedly fit to be tied, not only because Lewis didn't come home, but because he disapproved of Willie's lifestyle.
